Pohutukawa
Metyrosideros excelsa
The New Zealand Christmas Tree

The pohutukawa is one of the most spectacular trees of the country. It occurs in coastal forest in parts of North Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula dn in the Bay of Plenty and on some outlying islands. It is widely cultivated throughtout the country. It flowers during December and January, our summer.

The plant grows on steep cliffs, and the arial roots frequently seen on lower braches assist in anchoring the plant in its exposed habitats.
